Doulas

What is a birth doula?

A birth doula is a trained and experienced professional who provides continuous physical, emotional, and informational support to the birthing individual.

  • What services does a birth doula provide?
  • Assists the birthing individual in preparing for and carrying out their desired plans for how they want to labor and deliver their baby (induction, epidural, use of shower, tub, movement, relaxation, ambulation, pushing preference)
  • Reviews, instructs and coaches for the 3 Rs (Relaxation-Rhythm-Ritual)
  • Facilitates communication between the birthing individual, their partner and the clinical team
  • Assists with skin-to-skin contact after their baby is born and facilitates breastfeeding (establish latch)
  • Makes every effort to stay with the birthing individual throughout their labor, and if possible, through delivery and immediately thereafter

What are some of the benefits of a birth doula?

A more natural approach to childbirth is the safest and healthiest for both baby and the birthing individual. Studies have shown that when doulas attend birth, labors are shorter with fewer complications, fewer unplanned cesarean sections and better breastfeeding experiences. Doulas advocate and support a birthing individual’s birth preferences.
