About

Dr. Imran Akhtar grew up in Brooklyn, New York. He attended Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, where he double-majored in Neuroscience and Economics, and went to medical school at Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He started his orthopedic surgery residency in 2015 at Oklahoma State University – Center for Health Sciences. During his residency training, Dr. Akhtar developed a special interest in total hip and knee replacements. He further developed his specialized skills by completing a fellowship in adult reconstructive surgery at the Desert Orthopedic Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, in 2020.

Dr. Akhtar specializes in minimally invasive hip replacement, which reduces the size of surgical scars and expedites postoperative recovery. He also has interest in unicompartmental (partial) knee arthroplasty, including patellofemoral arthroplasty; and computer-navigated knee replacements, including the Rosa®, TMINI®, and Velys™ robotic-assisted knee replacement.

Dr. Akhtar is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons, and the American Osteopathic Association.

In his free time, Dr. Akhtar enjoys long-distance running and spending time with his family.

Dr. Imran Akhtar joined St. Peters Health Partners Medical Associates (SPHPMA) in July 2025 as one of the founding members of St. Peter’s Orthopedics.

Before joining SPHPMA, Dr. Akhtar worked in the Capital Region as a joint replacement specialist in private practice. He grew up in Brooklyn, New York, and received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Neuroscience and Behavioral Biology from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. He earned his Medical Degree from Nova Southeastern University-College of Osteopathic Medicine in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Dr. Akhtar completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at the Oklahoma State University – Center for Health Sciences in Tulsa. After finishing his residency, Dr. Akhtar spent an additional year completing an American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons Fellowship in Hip and Knee replacement at Desert Orthopedic Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.

“I find deep fulfillment in helping my patients return to the activities they love. The loss of mobility impacts not only the body but also the mind, and that’s why I chose to specialize in hip and knee care—areas that are central to movement and independence.

My approach to medicine is rooted in empathy and respect. I treat every patient as I would want my own family to be treated. Listening is at the heart of my practice. By truly hearing my patients’ concerns, we can build a personalized and effective care plan that supports their recovery and long-term well-being.”

Dr. Imran Akhtar MD provided comprehensive treatment, explaining the reasons for my back pain fully. He then supplied a referral for physical therapy within the St. Peter's network so that all my records are available in MyChart.
