Women, especially as they age, facing an increased of hip fractures.
Dr. Imran Akhtar of St. Peter’s Orthopedics, discussed risk factors and treatment options during an interview on WTEN/News10’s Women’s Health Wednesday.
From the story:
Nearly 75 percent of all hip fractures occur in women which can lead to much larger concerns like severe pain, limited mobility and other serious complications.
The risk of those hip fractures is equal to the combined risk of breast, uterine and ovarian cancer according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Dr. Imran Akhtar, an orthopedic surgeon with St. Peter’s Orthopedics, says lower bone density, increased bone loss after menopause and a wider pelvis affecting the angle of the hip joint, are all factors making women more prone to hip fractures.
