Admission Requirements
Applications for fall semester (which starts each August) are due by March 1.
Applications for spring semester (which starts each January) are due by September 15.
Applications for the Practical Nurse program (which starts each August) are due by May 15.
Candidates for the AD and PN programs must possess the following, at a minimum:
- a High School Diploma with a final cumulative average of 75 or above, or
- a General Equivalency Diploma (GED) with a standard score of at least 48 (or 480 on new grading scale) on each of the GED tests AND a total standard score of at least 240 (or 2400 on new grading scale), or
- a High School Equivalency (HSE) by passing all five sections of Test Assessing Secondary Completion (TASC) with a minimum score of 500 on each section.
- AD applicants must complete prerequisite courses in algebra, biology and chemistry*
- PN applicants (offered only at Samaritan School of Nursing) must complete a course in algebra*.
Applicants must submit the following to complete the application process:
- a complete application including essay and $60 application fee. View essay guidelines. This fee is waived for any employee of SPHP. It is also waived for the PN Program.
- All transcripts from all previous schools and colleges attended (whether or not you graduated or the program was related to Nursing)
- Pre-admission test (Test of Essential Academic Skills TEAS). The TEAS V will not be accepted after February 2018.
All required documents (i.e. TEAS score, Transcripts, application fee, essay) must be postmarked by the application deadline to consider the application complete.

Note: PN applicants admitted to the program are required to complete a background check prior to starting courses.

The Schools of Nursing do not accept applications from prospective students who need a visa to study in the US. Only citizens and those with a permanent resident card will be considered. Because the practice of nursing is an applied discipline with cognitive, sensory, affective and motor components, students must perform functions which are necessary for the safe practice of nursing and essential to the licensing requirements for nursing. Applicants must be capable of meeting the eight core performance standards outlined below with or without reasonable accommodations for enrollment and/or progression.
Advanced Placed Applicants
Thank you for considering applying to Samaritan Hospital School of Nursing and St. Peter's Hospital College of Nursing.
Students who are licensed as a Practical Nurse have two options for entry into our program. You may:
- Begin at the beginning and start in our fundamental Class-Nursing 1.
- Or, Attend the Bridge Workshop and bridge in Nursing 2-Medical Surgical nursing
As an Advanced Placed student, you will be expected to know and be able to perform the following: fundamental nursing care, head-to-toe physical assessment, hand washing, glucometer use, medication administration, PPE Donning and Doffing, clean dressing changes, documentation, basic dosage calculation, and nursing process. This will be reviewed at the required Bridge Workshop prior to the start of your program.
Students have 24 access to the lab for practice once they have attended the Bridge Workshop.

Prerequisite Courses at High School or College Level Required:
- Algebra
- Biology (must include lab component)
- Chemistry (must include lab component)
Prerequisite Course at High School or College Level Require the following Grades:
- High school level courses require minimum score/grade of 75
- Non-credit bearing college level math and science courses require minimum grade of B
- Credit bearing college level math and science courses require minimum grade of C
AD applicants must also take the ATI - Test of Essential Academic Skills Examination (TEAS). Applicants should contact the Admission's Office at 518-525-6850 for instructions on scheduling the exam through PSI.
APPLICANTS to the PRACTICAL NURSE PROGRAM (PN)
Program offered at Samaritan Hospital School of Nursing
Prerequisite Course in High School or College Level Algebra required, with minimum score of 70/C. PN applicants must also take the ATI - Test of Essential Academic Skills Examination (TEAS). Applicants should contact the Admission's Office at 518-525-6850 for instructions on scheduling the exam through PSI.
