Arthur Gran, MD, infectious disease specialist with Troy Infectious Disease, appeared on WTEN/News10 where he discussed the latest statewide outbreak of measles.

New York declared a statewide emergency earlier in October, which Dr. Gran explained helps to expand access to the measles vaccine.

From the interview:

Public health trackers report that measles activity has risen significantly worldwide following post-COVID drops in routine immunization rates.

Dr. Arthur Gran, an infectious disease specialist with St. Peter’s Health Partners, says young children are most vulnerable to the highest rates of complications from the disease. The reason is because very young children can’t receive the first vaccine dose of the MMR vaccine if they’re under 12 months of age. Measles is a highly contagious, but vaccine preventable, viral disease.
